Yay! My wish came true: Beverly Cinema will be showing an Audrey Hepburn double feature this Friday and Saturday. Two of her best movies where she sings, she dances: Breakfast At Tiffany’s and Funny Face.
Leave it to Audrey to make a country bumpkin-turned-New York City call girl heartbreakingly beautiful and elegant. And what girl didn’t want to emulate Holly Golightly’s stylishness and mannerisms and even that accent, dahling? Nope, nothing helps getting over the mean reds better than seeing Breakfast At Tiffany’s. The girl throws crazy parties, dresses fabulously, shoplifts, finds herself and falls in love all in a beautiful New York setting. And something about Henry Mancini’s soundtrack for the movie that perfectly signals autumn for me. Maybe it’s the wistfulness of it that just goes so well with the air getting chillier, the leaves falling to the ground and the days getting shorter.
And in Funny Face, Audrey made pairing white socks with black pants cute. If you haven’t seen the movie before you’ll probably recognize the dance scene from that Gap ad. This classic musical blends Gershwin with Givenchy and Fred Astaire. S’wonderful! As “plain Jane” Jo Stockton, she’s transformed into a high-fashion model in Paris. The scenes where she’s posing in different Givenchy gowns around that gorgeous city is one of my faves.
After the double feature, I think cocktails at Lola’s are in order.
