The upcoming date 6/6/06 holds significance for religious people — be they Catholic or Satanist. Some cities are actually anticipating demonstrations. So I was curious to see how a big Left Coast city like L.A. would react to the day. That, and a reader wrote asking what “excellently evil” events were going on during this unholy Tuesday, which just so happens to also be her birthday.

A Movie: Who can forget that the remake of the classic film, The Omen, opens this day? Julia Stiles plays Damien’s unlucky mother while Mia Farrow (who played the unlucky mother in 1968’s Rosemary’s Baby) is cast as Damien’s creepy guardian. Check the Arclight site closer to the date for showtimes.

A Play: The Black Rider, William Burroughs’ Faustian play with music by Tom Waits, has a performance at the Ahmanson Theatre.

A High Mass: Anton LaVey’s Church of Satan is hosting a Satanic high mass at the Steve Allen Theater. There, a Church of Satan priest will bless those who show up and perform three rituals: The Compassion Ritual where you declare things you want like a good job, etc.; the Lust Ritual which is all sexual in nature; and the Destruction Ritual, where, if you hate someone a whole lot, you can symbolically destroy them by describing all the grisly things you want to happen to them. Evil! Unfortunately for the curious, this event is closed to the public.

A Wedding: Anton LaVey’s grandson will be getting married in a public ceremony. From what I can tell it’s going to be at the Henry Fonda Theatre. Called “666: A Tribute to Evil,” the event offers appearances by Glenn Danzig, El Vez, Dolemite and some guys from the Alkaline Trio.

A Holiday Party: Radio Free Satan’s 6th anniversary party doesn’t actually fall on 6/6 but on 6/5, the eve of the unholy holiday, when they will countdown to midnight. At the event there will be live music, performance art, burlesque dancers and bondage demonstrations.
