Who doesn’t love Stevie Wonder? His music stretches back to the days when Motown was young and he was known simply as “Little Stevie.” Not so little now as the appeal of his songs crosses generations and cultures. I performed to “Skeletons” in my high school dance troupe. My mom used to love singing “I Just Called to Say I Love You” to us kids. And who hasn’t sung “Ebony & Ivory” in karaoke? That’s why I’m really excited about this tribute night at Soul Folks Cafe. I want to see what these NYC djs can do with his music as they take sounds that I grew up with and reinterpret it with a turntable or two.
DJ Spinna and Bobbito have taken their popular New York Stevie Wonder tribute night on the road, going to Amsterdam, London and Tokyo, and now they’ll be spinning Stevie in downtown’s Soul Folks Cafe.
From Massive Selector:
In September of ’99, DJ E-Love produced a Stevie Wonder tribute party at Baby Jupiter (NY) and invited DJ Spinna and Bobbito a.k.a. DJ Cucumberslice to spin….Their mutual love and respect for Stevie Wonder, as well as their extensive knowledge of his catalogue of music, provided for instant chemistry and the party exploded.
