Oh what fun! _
I luuvve singing Christmas carols. Just belting out songs about going on sleigh rides, sneaking up on Santa, playing the drums for baby Jesus… And not singing to impress anyone but to get in the spirit of the holidays. Who doesn’t wanna do that? It’s just too bad that in L.A., caroling is a tradition left to the traveling minstrels of mall performers.
A couple of years ago, my desire to sing in celebration of Christmas was so great that I even went to the annual L.A. Chorale Messiah Sing-Along. The thing is, the audience is mostly made up of choir groups…with their own sheet music. Yeah, it was a disaster. A fun disaster though! Sure, I had a hard time following through and keeping up, especially since I’m not a singer. Not. At. All. But I highly recommend it. (Dec. 19th at Disney Hall)
Not a singer? Go for the once-in-a-lifetime experience of hearing Handel’s “Messiah” performed in true surround sound from the audience to the stage in an awesome setting. A singer? You get to perform “Messiah” with thousands of other singers in Disney Hall!
For all others who want traditional caroling, there is the Holiday Sing-Along presented by Harry Shearer and his Welsh chanteuse wife, Judith Owen. In the Disney Concert Hall, your angelic voice will be drowned out, I mean, accompanied by a full choir and organ. Lyric sheets will also be provided for the audience.
From LA.com:
The husband-and-wife team will be spreading holiday cheer laced with witty banter we’ve come to expect from Shearer’s This Is Spinal Tap, “The Simpsons,” and “Saturday Night Live” credits and Owen’s reputation for infusing performances with sharp-edged humor.
The Disney Hall site bills this event as a “family-friendly sing-along [that] will have you belting out your holiday favorites” so you know that means there will be a bunch of rugrats running around. But so what? It sounds like a lot of fun.
Event: Wednesday, December 14th at 8pm
