Saw John Waters at the Orange County Museum of Art earlier this week and you want more? He’ll be at Book Soup in West Hollywood this Saturday the 5th signing copies (and memorabilia if you buy a copy) of his new collection of screenplays, Hairspray, Female Trouble and Multiple Maniacs ($15.95).

Seventeen years since his first collection of screenplays came out, Waters is back in the public eye, pairing his film exhibition at the Orange County Museum of Art with the release of this new collection. I used to work at Book Soup doing these events and the turnouts for celebrities is usually chaotic, filled with autograph seekers, paparazzi and would-be filmmakers. Last time I worked a John Waters event, Paul Reubens (aka his male groupie) was hanging around. So if you show up looking for an autograph, you might get a double whammy of kitsch from Waters and Pee Wee. But, remember, if you want one from Waters for your videotape of Pink Flamingos, the Book Soup people insist that you purchase his screenplay collection first, showing evidence of your receipt upon presentation of your memorabilia.

Book Soup usually has people line up outside first. It’s when the event gets underway that things get crazy. People cut in line when the crowd gets moving so feel free to put pushy people in their place. That always irritated me when people cut the line. But then again, maybe things are run better now.
